Two DCU students in final Irish squad for European Athletics Championships

Athletes Jack Raftery and Mark Smyth have been named as part of Irish team - they will be joining eight members of DCU Alumni competing at this summer's event in Rome

Two DCU students have been named by Athletics Ireland in the final Irish squad for this week’s European Athletics Championships in Rome.

Jack Raftery, a fourth year student in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, and Mark Smyth, a final year student in Emerging Media, have made the Irish team.

The pair join eight DCU Alumni who are also competing in the Championships which get underway on Friday June 7th.

Jack will compete in the Men’s 4x400m and in the Mixed 4x400m events. 

Mark will compete in the Men’s 200m and the Men’s 4x100m events.

This is their first step in a busy summer tracking towards the Paris 2024 Olympics. 

The eight DCU Alumni who are featuring in this year’s European Championships are: 

  • Andrew Coscoran, from Balbriggan, who is competing in the Men’s 1500m
  • Brian Fay, from Ballymun Road, who is competing in the Men’s 5,000m and 10,000m 
  • Sophie Becker, from New Ross, who is competing in the Individual 400m, the Mixed 4x400m and the Women’s 4x400m
  • Cormac Dalton, from Mullingar, who is competing in the Men’s 10,000m
  • Joseph Ojewumi, from Tallaght, who is competing in the Men’s 4x100m
  • Jodie McCann, from Dublin, who is competing in the Women’s 5,000m
  • Kelly McGrory, from Donegal, who is competing in the Women’s 400m Hurdles and the Women’s 4x400m
  • Cliodhna Manning, from Kilkenny, who is competing in the Women’s 4x400m
