DCU Learning Innovation Unit: Focus on Assessment and Feedback
Learning Innovation Unit
Focus on Assessment and Feedback
Introduction
With the move from a content centred approach to teaching to a more student focused approach, there is greater focus now on how assessment both tests the demonstration of learning outcomes but also how it drives the learning process.
To ensure effective use of assessment and assessment approaches, Biggs and Tang (2007) advocate an approach of asking why, what, how, who, and when in relation to assessment practice. This resource uses this approach to explain assessment and to bring together practical resources to develop relevant approaches to quality assessment at DCU.
- Why? –The purpose and varying roles of assessment
- Who? – Student/Teacher perspectives on assessment
- What? – Learning outcomes and assessment
- When? – Summative, continuous or formative?
- How? – Good practice and new approaches
