

Celebrating our newest doctors in the School of History & Geography
On Friday 28th March, the School of History & Geography proudly celebrated the graduation of five new PhD scholars at the Helix. Their wide-ranging research topics - from public health and food politics to urban life, electoral history, and political biography - demonstrate the School’s commitment to exploring Ireland’s past from multiple perspectives.
Dr. Kelly Adamson completed a thesis titled Public health in crisis? Informing public health policy in Ireland, 1939-53, under the supervision of Dr. Juliana Adelman.
Dr. Noel Carolan explored The politics of Ireland’s food supply, 1895-1923: through peace, war, revolution and partition, supervised by Dr. Daithí Ó'Corráin.
Dr. Ann Marie Durkan examined The place of animals and animal-related industries in twentieth-century Dublin City (c.1910 and c.1973), jointly supervised by Dr. Ruth McManus and Dr. Juliana Adelman.
Dr. Michael Grant researched Electoral Politics in County Carlow, 1761–1841: Coalition, Consensus and Contestation, supervised by Professor Jimmy Kelly.
Dr. Michael Loughman’s thesis, Doctor, Republican, Statesman: James Ryan and the development of the independent Irish state, 1892–1970, and was supervised by Dr. Daithí Ó Corráin.
These outstanding researchers exemplify the School’s commitment to critical, original scholarship that deepens understanding of Ireland’s complex past. Congratulations to them all.
