Over 2,600 international geographers gathered at DCU in late August 2024 for the 35th International Geographical Congress, IGC Dublin 2024. The congress was organised by a local organising committee made up of geographers from across the Irish universities, including DCU’s Dr Jonathan Cherry, on behalf of the Geographical Society of Ireland. FHSS Executive Dean Professor Derek Hand and University President Professor Daire Keogh addressed the opening and closing ceremonies respectively of this unique event for the discipline of Geography in Ireland. Geography staff and postgraduate students from the School of History and Geography, alongside colleagues from across the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Science and Health and the Institute of Education were involved in many aspects of the congress, including organising and chairing sessions, delivering papers and posters and leading field trips. Such opportunities afforded unique opportunities in showcasing research projects, networking and developing research collaborations. An integral part of the programme of events organised and enjoyed by the international delegates were the fieldtrips. Dr Ruth McManus led several walking tours of the Drumcondra area, Dr Gerry O Reilly led a group to county Meath while Dr Jonathan Cherry led a group to county Wicklow. A series of public engagement events including ‘Mapping Ireland’ hosted by the RIA was convened by Jonathan Cherry on behalf of the local organising committee.
