Research Collections are managed by the Special Collections & Archives Directorate in the Library, a team which work on different aspects of our printed, archival and digital collections.

DCU Library

October 2016

SC&A is formed at the time of DCU 'Incorporation'. Much early work is focused on collating collections from the libraries of DCU, St. Patrick's College Drumcondra, Mater Dei Institute of Education and the Church of Ireland College of Education..

Exhibition

December 2017

A new gallery space is launched beside the ground floor issue desk with an opening exhibition entitled Discover: Special Collections & Archives. This exhibit highlighted key themes and collection strengths in areas such as politics, media history, education and theology.

Dublin City University to receive historic Irish Pirate Radio Archive

October 2018

The Irish Pirate Radio Exhibition. curated by Eddie Bohan, is hosted in the O'Reilly Library. The archive from which the exhibition was drawn was later donated to DCU.

Reading Room

January 2019

Following the cataloguing of selected collections to make them discoverable and available for research, our consultation service is launched in a new Reading Room on the lower ground floor of the O'Reilly Library.

Shortlist for Mary Raftery Prize announced

April 2019

Fearless, an exhibition on the journalism of Mary Raftery is launched, following the donation of Mary's papers to DCU. Curated by Dr. Mark O'Brien and SC&A, this marked the 20th anniversary of the original transmission of the RTÉ documentary series States of Fear and covered Mary's groundbreaking print and broadcast journalism career.

Bico

November 2019

Papers from the British and Irish Communist Organisation (BICO) and its associated groups are donated to DCU Library. Delivered in 27 old and battered suitcases, the BICO archive is an extensive collection of publications and records relating to a variety of left-wing organisations, campaigns, and debates on topical issues from the 1960s to the present.

Digital Repository of Ireland

August 2020

DCU Library joins Digital Repository of Ireland (DRI) as part of our strategy towards promoting greater visibility and preservation for our digital collections.

Lester letters

January 2021

Our first digital collection is launched following the digitisation of the papers of the former Irish diplomat Seán Lester which are held in DCU Library. This can be viewed here on Atom, our archival management system and also here in the DRI.

Charles J. Haughey: Politics in a Changing Ireland, an exhibition on the late Taoiseach created by the directorate, and curated by Prof. Gary Murphy and Dr. Philip O'Connor, is launched. Members of the Haughey family are pictured at the launch with Prof. Daire Keogh, President of DCU.
