Professor Mike Askew

I Hate Maths - Wednesday 19th October, 2022, DCU St Patrick’s Campus

In this first ‘I Hate Maths’ workshop at DCU, Prof Mike Askew will introduce and discuss a set of maths strategy games that can be used in the classroom to support mathematical thinking.

DCU Institute of Education Naughton Chair and CASTeL are delighted to invite you to 'I hate maths', presented by guest speaker Professor Mike Askew.

We aim to attract an audience of primary pre- and in-service teachers and other academics – many of whom freely express the ‘I hate mathematics’ sentiment, to engage in some fun and communal game playing and discussion! And hopefully to leave the seminar entertaining the possibility that you do not maybe need to hate maths as much as you might have thought. Bring pencil, paper and willingness to engage.

The central part of the session is focused on playing the games, and working through and discussing the mathematical thinking involved with the audience.

Prof Mike Askew brings extensive experience of research and teacher development in the field of primary maths across the UK, Australia and South Africa. He is the author of several books for primary maths teachers, and for parents interested in understanding key maths ideas and helping their children with school mathematics.
