Geography, Environmental and Outdoor (GEO) Education
The Major Specialism in Geography, Environmental and Outdoor (GEO) Education commenced in the Institute of Education in September 2016, following on from previously successful electives in geography. As part of the GEO Specialism, students engage with the international Geography Education community. The Geographical Association is part of this community, as it promotes Geography at all levels of schooling across the world. Students from the GEO Specialism attended the GA’s annual conference at the University of Guildford in April with their lecturer Dr Susan Pike. They took part in seminars, attended lecturers and met many their ‘geography heroes’, whose work they have read over the past two years. Their mascot Red Fraggle also met Winchester University’s gnomes! They were warmly greeted throughout their time at the conference. Photographs show the students meeting Dr Mary Biddulph, President of the GA as well as Stephen Rawlinson, out-going President, as well as
academics in Geography Education, including Julia Tanner, Sharon Witt, Jeremy Krause. Students were very positive about the experience, and hope to return to the conference next year.
