Brian Ruane receives Human Rights Hero award
Brain Ruane, School of STEM, Innovation and Global Studies and programme leader for the Centre for Human Rights Education (CHRCE), recently received the Balbriggan Educate Together Human Rights Hero award for 2016. Brian received the award for his work in teacher education and human rights education and for actively campaigning over the years for the right to education, the right to freedom and the rights of disabled persons. Brian has a long history of human rights education and activism and, as Director of Human Rights Education in Amnesty International (Irish Section), he was instrumental in establishing the Centre for Human Rights and Citizenship Education in partnership with St Patrick’s College in 2004. Since then the Centre has developed a programme of research, education and resource creation that explores and supports citizenship and human rights education across primary, post primary and third level education sectors. As the award demonstrates, Brian’s work in human rights education and human rights activism continues to inspire schools, communities and young people.
