Celebrating a decade of Maths Week on St Patrick’s Campus

The School of STEM Education, Innovation & Global Studies is delighted to offer a programme of events to celebrate Mathas Week and encourages all to engage – there is a wide variety from which to choose, both on and off campus. This is the 11th Maths Week (from 15th to 23rd October) and the School of STEM Education, Innovation & Global Studies proudly takes on the baton carried on the Drumcondra campus by the Department of Mathematics since the first Maths Week in 2006.

We recommend the following:

• For the entire campus community – the exhibition (beginning Tuesday) on the ground floor of the Library – drop in at any time
• BEd students in all years – check out Izak 9 on Tuesday at lunchtime
• For BEd1 taking Foundation Mathematics – lecture by Prof Robin Wilson on Graph Theory at 11 on Tuesday
• For BEd2 specializing in Mathematics – if you’re free you are welcome to join BEd1 students for Prof Wilson’s lecture (just drop me an email if you have any questions)
• For BEd3 specializing in Mathematics – be sure not to let Maths Week (MW) pass without some focussed MW activity (check out events in your area on the MW website)
• For BEd4 specializing in Mathematics – Becky Warren will lead a workshop at our rescheduled session on Wednesday (11:00-12:50, details to be announced)
• For BA2 taking Maths – Prof Robin Wilson will join us on Tuesday at 10. In preparation, take another look at his Here’s Looking at Euclid and write down any questions that occur to you
• For BA3 taking Maths – you are welcome to join Prof Wilson at the BA2 session, or go to one or more of the off-campus events

• Prof Jannette Elwood’s CARPE Lecture entitled The Irish Leaving Certificate: reflections from teachers and students on predictability and other assessment quandaries – this will be of interest to those intending to teach at post-primary as well as those remembering their own post-primary experience of maths …
• The annual Hamilton Walk – that predates MW – all are welcome on this, but if intending to go it is best to send Maurice OReilly [link to maurice.oreilly@dcu.ie] an email request for more information (as there are a few vital practical matters that need attention). The walk starts at the intriguing Dunsink Observatory and proceeds to Broom Bridge on the Royal Canal where WR Hamilton discovered quaternions on 16^th October 1843. • Prof Shafi Goldwasser is speaking in TCD on Modern cryptography in the age of cloud computing – this will give an idea of how maths is used to address 21^st century challenges. Booking (essential) is through the RIA.
