The DCU sport scholarship programme supports your holistic development as both an athlete and a student, enabling you to balance your different commitments and achieve your personal best. The level of support received depends on factors like your past achievements, potential needs and individual profile. 

Since introducing Gaelic Sports scholarships in 1996, the DCU sport scholarship programme has expanded greatly. Students have been awarded scholarships in 18 different sports, empowering them to succeed in their academic, professional and sporting endeavours.

Athletics

Join one of the best university athletics programmes in the country, developing student athletes across all disciplines of athletics. With DCU Athletics, you’ll receive coaching of the highest quality, access to Irish University Athletics Association intervarsity competitions and train at Ireland’s national athletics facility, Morton Stadium. 

The minimum standard for application is schools, youth or junior international representation.*

Gaelic Games
Gaelic Games

DCU has a strong track record of success in Gaelic Games and supports sport scholarship students across all five codes - Camogie, Handball, Men's Football, Ladies' Football and Hurling.  The Gaelic Games scholarship programme in DCU is underpinned by top-class coaches, sports science support and sports facilities to support student athlete development.

The minimum standard for application is minor county level and capable of competing at a higher level.*

Golfer
Golf

Established in 2024, this scholarship supports the academic and sporting success of a talented student golfer at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

As part of the selection process, we will consider: 

  • Current WAGR Ranking
  • Applicants performance at National & International competitions at under 18 and beyond
  • Applicants handicap. Applicants must have a Handicap Index of scratch or better for male applicants, or 2.0 or better for female applicants.
  • Applicant's status on the Golf Ireland performance pathway

Rugby

Be part of DCU Rugby’s proud record of competitive success and exceptional student development across both the men’s and women’s games. DCU students have represented Ireland Senior XV and Ireland under-20s as students and graduates, and have successfully combined provincial academy, Women’s National Talent Squad, and Centre of Excellence contracts with full-time study. 

The minimum standard for application for women is provincial and/or national representation at 7s or 15s and IRFU All-Ireland league player. The minimum standard for application for men is provincial and/or national representation at 7s or 15s and IRFU All Ireland League or JP Fanagan Premier Division 1 Player.*

Soccer

Maximise your talents on and off the pitch with DCU Soccer. Our Women's team compete in the third-level Colleges & University Football Leagues (CUFL) and Women’s Soccer Colleges Association of Ireland (WSCAI) competitions. Our Men’s teams compete for DCU in the third-level Colleges & University Football Leagues (CUFL) and Irish Universities Football Union (IUFU) intervarsity competitions.

The minimum standard for application for women is League of Ireland U19 or Senior squad player or Irish U17, U19, or Senior International squad player. The minimum standard for application for men is League of Ireland U20 or Senior squad player, Irish U17, U18, U19, U21 International squad player, Leinster Senior League team squad player at Senior Sunday 1 level or above, or U18 Schools Interprovincial squad player.*

Basketball players
Other Sports

Are you a high-performing athlete in another sport? DCU offers sports scholarships to exceptional athletes across a variety of disciplines, including but not limited to badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing, cricket, cycling and swimming. 

Applicants must be performance athletes with a proven track record at the junior or senior international level. This includes being an active member of a high-performance squad with the relevant  National Governing Body of Sport and competing at National,  European, World and/or Olympic events.

To apply for the Performance Sport CAO Points Concession and/or the Sport Scholarship programme applicants must complete an online application form available here

 

Please note:

  • Applications for programmes for the 2025-2026 academic year will open on the 1st of February 2025 and the closing date for receipt of applications is the 1st of May 2025 at 5pm.
  • Applicants who apply for the CAO Points Concession programme must also make an application for a DCU programme of study through the CAO.  Applicants should apply through the CAO by the normal closing date of 1st February or before the late closing date of 1st May and complete a DCU Performance Sport online application form.
  • Paper applications or late applications will not be accepted.
