The School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies (SALIS) is delighted to announce the second iteration of Dublin City University Languages Week, generously supported by Languages Connect, which will take place from Monday, March 6th to Friday, March 10th, 2023
During this week, Fifth Year secondary school students can attend a series of exciting and varied events that will consist of a taster language session and a practical cultural workshop in each language.
Students must sign up for both the taster session and the practical workshop in the language of their choice. The taster sessions and workshops will be delivered through Spanish, German and French (CEFR Level A2.2 / B1) whereas the Japanese and Chinese tester classes and practical workshops will be aimed at beginners.
In addition, a DCU Languages Competition will run from February 1st until March 19th. Students will create an infographic pertaining to their language of choice with a super prize of one iPad per language.
If you are curious to know a little bit more about art or culture in the language you choose, or would like to discover a new language this is a great opportunity to find out!

Are you a 5th Year student currently studying Spanish / Japanese / German / French or Chinese who wants to showcase his or her love for their second language and culture (L2)? Then we have a really exciting competition that is right up your street…so to speak!
At the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies at DCU, we teach Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. So if you are learning any of these languages and you want to get creative, design your own digital infographic in our language competition as part of DCU Languages Week 2023.
1. Each student will submit one entry in one of the following five languages:
- Chinese
- French
- German
- Japanese
- Spanish
2. Each student will design a digital infographic that answers the question “Why I love all things Spanish / Japanese / German / French / Chinese” depending on their language choice. The criteria upon which this digital artefact will be judged are the following:
- Use of target language
- Visual impact
- Cultural relevance
- Creativity
3. Pictures of posters are not permitted. If the infographic does not adhere to the theme, it will not be judged. Any writing on the infographic must be in the target language of their choice. You are free to use the software of your choice but Canva has wonderful digital affordances.
4. The digital infographic should be submitted as a PDF file through the Entry Form tab. Submissions will be accepted from February 1st to March 19th. Please include the following elements in your file name: your first name + your surname + language
5. Go to the Entry Form tab to enter your digital infographic in the language of your choice - Chinese, French, German, Japanese or Spanish. We can only accept one entry per student.
