Pronouns at Work: A Guide
1. PRONOUNS
- Pronouns are words that a person would like others to use when talking about them and form an important element of a person’s sense of identity
- Commonly used pronouns include “he, him, his”, “she, her, hers” and “they, them, theirs”
- Pronouns convey a person's gender identity and don't necessarily align with the sex a person was assigned at birth. Pronouns should not be assumed.
- Proper use of gender identity terms, including pronouns, is an important part of showing courtesy and respect.
2. INCLUSIVE WORKPLACES
- Normalising the practice of sharing pronouns can help to build a more inclusive environment.
- Sharing your own pronouns can create an invitation for others to do the same and signals a safe space for people who are transgender or non-binary.
- Think about your own pronouns and how you would feel if someone didn’t respect them. Understanding the impact of being referred to by the wrong pronouns can help us to be more inclusive
- Having your pronouns visible or stating your pronouns, signals that you are aware that pronouns can’t be presumed, and in sharing that awareness, you may prompt others to pause before they assume a person’s gender or pronouns.
3. SHARING PRONOUNS
- Sharing your pronouns is optional and a matter of personal choice
- Here are some examples of how you can add your pronouns to your email signature, Zoom name, and social media profiles
- You can also state your pronouns when introducing yourself for the first time.
- In a physical office space, you can add pronouns to name tags, office doors, name plates etc.

- Déan machnamh ar do chuid forainmneacha agus samhlaigh cén mothúcháin a mbeidh agat mura raibh meas ag duine orthu. Má tá tuiscint againn ar seo tá muid níos eolaí ar bhealaí gur féidir linn a bheith níos cuimsithí.
