  • to recognise barriers to effective listening
  • to practice techniques for active listening
  • to understand the importance of body language, filler words, pauses, in effective listening

What is Active Listening?

Active listening is a communication skill that goes beyond merely hearing words. It involves fully engaging with the speaker, understanding their message, and responding thoughtfully. Here’s an in-depth look at active listening:

Key Principles of Active Listening

  • Be Fully Present: Focus entirely on the speaker without distractions (e.g., checking your phone or thinking about your response).
  • Pay Attention to Non-Verbal Cues: Notice tone of voice, body language, and facial expressions for additional context.
  • Suspend Judgment: Avoid forming opinions or interrupting before the speaker has finished.
  • Clarify and Confirm Understanding: Use questions or paraphrasing to ensure you grasp the speaker’s message.
  • Respond Thoughtfully: Reflect on what has been said and provide relevant, empathetic responses.
