Due to exceptional demand, the Graduate Studies will be holding a once-off series of sessions this December 5th and 6th.
Thursday 5th (morning)
9.30-13.00: Masters by Research/Doctorate Supervisory Styles
Course code: DCU007
The aims of the programme are to:
- explore the multifaceted role of supervision in a PhD context
- provide practical advice on how to establish and maintain the supervisor-student relationship
- examine the skills in managing expectations and giving constructive, actionable feedback
- highlight DCU policies and procedures around supervision
Thursday 5th (afternoon)
14.00-17.00: Understanding the Post Grad Examination Process
Course code: DCU006
The aims of the programme are to:
- Provide participants with the opportunity to develop themselves as an examiner at research level
- Explore examination criteria and outcomes
- Discuss research on how the standard for theses at masters and doctoral research is established by examiners, and how examiners become established in their own practice
- Highlight the policies, procedures and experience around examining including the viva voce examination process and recommendations
Friday 6th (morning)
9.30-12: Chairing a Research Viva Voce
Course code: DCU008
The aims of the programme are to:
- Provide participants with the opportunity to develop themselves as an Viva Voce Chairperson
- Explore the role of a Chairperson, examination criteria and outcomes
- Discuss common practices before, during and post the Viva Voce process, plus interaction with the examiners
- Highlight the policies, procedures and experience around the Viva Voce examination process and recommendations
Please not that each session has a separate booking code so you can choose to attend one. If you want to attend all three you must make three separate bookings.
This is an exceptional measure and will not be offered at the end of every Semester. These sessions will be held again separately in Semester 2.
