Omeka for Digital Storytelling, An Introduction to

Audience:
This is a hands-on workshop in Omeka, an open source tool for managing digital objects and creating digital exhibits or websites using those objects. It is aimed primarily at researchers interested in digital storytelling or creating digital exhibits.
This workshop will provide a guided tour of Omeka's features, structure, and extended capabilities. Participants will create their first digital exhibit using metadata best practices.
No prior knowledge of Omeka is assumed.
Course Descriptor
Omeka is an open source publishing platform popular with scholars, educators and GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) institutions who want to plan and build digital exhibits and resources without having to learn coding languages. Aspects covered in this workshop will include:
- Flavours of Omeka
- dot net vs dot org
- Omeka Classic vs Omeka S
- Architecture of Omeka
- Items and Collections, Exhibits and Sites
- Creating Item Metadata with Dublin Core
- File Formats
- Rights and Permissions
- Advanced functionality with Plugins and Modules
- e.g. timelines, mapping, transcription
