This is an introduction to IIIF (International Image Interoperability Framework), a modern method of presenting high quality images from digitised cultural heritage collections in a way that enables new forms of engagement and reuse.

It is aimed at all researchers and staff interested in learning new ways to access and use digital collections. No prior knowledge of IIIF is assumed.

Course Descriptor

IIIF is an open-source standard to make images and audio/visual resources more accessible and useable for researchers. It aims to solve common problems and requirements when using online materials through the collective efforts of a seasoned community of technologists, librarians, researchers. You might already be working with IIIF images without being aware!

At its simplest, IIIF uses APIs to make images load quickly and zoom smoothly. But it also allows you to:

  • pull images together for comparison from different sources at full resolution
  • save or link directly to details or portions of images
  • gather IIIF images together to create new exhibits, projects or exercises
  • use open-source tools to annotate, transcribe, collaborate, and more

In this online workshop, you will be introduced to IIIF and learn:

  • how to find IIIF images from different sources, including DCU Special Collections & Archives
  • how to engage with and reuse those images in different ways using IIIF tools
  • how to locate IIIF community resources where you can learn more!
