Pensions | Retiring from DCU - Support for retired staff
Retirement marks the culmination of a dedicated career, but it also signifies the beginning of a new chapter in life.
At DCU we recognise and deeply value the contribution of our staff members throughout their years of service. As you transition into retirement, we remain committed to ensuring your well-being and continued connection to the university community.
We believe the expertise and experiences of retired staff members are invaluable. That’s why we offer services and resources tailored to meet their diverse needs and preferences – we want to foster your sense of belonging and engagement even beyond your active employment.
Community, engagement and social connection
Transitioning into retirement can be both exciting and challenging.
To thank you for your contribution to DCU, we’ll hold a retirement event to mark your retirement. When you retire, we’ll contact you with details of this event. The DCU People team is available to you if you have any questions or issues after you retire.
As a retired staff member, you can get a retired staff identity card so you can use and borrow from the DCU Libraries on all three campuses. You won’t be able to access online library resources after 2 August 2024.
To activate your retired staff ID card, please present it at the library issue desk on your first visit to the library after you retire.
You have an extraordinary wealth of expertise and experience, and we would truly appreciate it if you would consider mentoring DCU staff after you retire. If you’d like to find out more about doing this, please get in touch with learning.development@dcu.ie.
After you retire, you can still access all campus restaurant facilities, including the 1838 Club and Student Restaurant. You can also still make private bookings for the 1838 Club. To use these facilities, you may need to present your DCU retired staff ID card.
You can continue to use the carparking across the three DCU campuses using the virtual parking system.
You can still use DCU Sport facilities after you retire, paying the reduced staff membership rates (as an individual, couple or family). Find the application form and rates on the DCU Sport website or call in person to DCU Sport. Make sure to mention you’re a retiree on your form. Deductions for your membership can continue as normal through payroll.
If you're a member of the DCU VHI scheme with deductions being made through payroll, this will automatically continue. If you want to end your membership, please contact VHI directly.
If you were a member of the group life plan, you automatically join the retired member’s group plan when you retire. Cornmarket will write to you directly to give you the option to opt out. The plan provides for the payment of a tax-free lump sum to your estate when you die.
You’ll be sent a pensions declaration once a year, which you must complete for audit purposes.
