NCFB releases first-of-its-kind research report Irish Family Business by Numbers
The report sheds light onto the immense role this unique business form plays in the Irish economy and wider society
DCU National Centre for Family Business releases critical findings in 2020 report, Irish Family Business by Numbers. The research which was conducted by Professor Colm O'Gorman and researcher Keeva Farrelly gives readers a snapshot of the role of family-run firms in Irish life. Employing approximately two-thirds (938,000) of the working population in Ireland and accounting for 64% of Irish businesses (160,700 firms in total), excluding agriculture and farming activities, it is clear that family businesses are the economic backbone of the nation. Critically, the report shows that of the 938,000 family businesses in Ireland, 91% of those are micro-firms, employing between 1 and 9 people at any given time. In today's Sunday Business Post, Centre Director Eric Clinton comments on the challenges family businesses are facing during COVID19 and a word from EU Trade Commissioner Phil Hogan, welcoming the findings of the research.
