Bunting Bonanza for Culture Night

DCU Library is running a competition to help us create colourful bunting for Culture Night 2024, taking place in September. We hope to transform the St Patrick’s Campus in Drumcondra into a dazzling, bunting-filled space for this annual community celebration.

Bunting

We invite you to contribute either loose triangles or a finished piece of bunting to the competition. The bunting will form part of our Culture Night celebrations for years to come so we're asking for submissions made out of fabric, as it's sustainable and weatherproof.

You can sew fabric remnants together, or knit or crochet your bunting - there will be prizes for the best entries!

You'll find the application form, bunting template, terms & conditions and step-by-step instructions below.

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Complete this online application form to register your interest in the competition.

  2. Include your postal address in the form if you'd like us to post you a bunting template, or print it out in A3 size using this bunting template.

  3. Use the template to cut out two fabric triangles (see gallery for photo instructions for steps 3 - 8).
  4. Fit the fabric triangles together - the ‘wrong’ side of the fabric should be facing out.

  5. Pin the triangles together so they stay together while you’re sewing.
  6. Sew 1 cm in from the side of the fabric (do not sew along the top of the triangle).

  7. Turn your fabric pocket inside out and push out the point of the triangle.
  8. Submit your triangles to us as loose pieces (minimum of 10) OR take the optional step below to submit a finished piece of bunting:

Optional step: To submit a finished piece of bunting, use a minimum of 15 triangles. Fold a long piece of bias tape or ribbon in half and iron it. Starting 30cm in along the ribbon and finishing 30cm before the end of the ribbon, evenly space your 15 triangles along the ribbon just below the fold line. Fold the top half of the bias tape/ribbon over the bottom half to cover the tops of the triangles. Pin in place and sew the entire length of the bias tape or ribbon to complete your bunting.

  9. Complete and drop your loose triangles or finished bunting to the ground floor helpdesk in O’Reilly Library or Cregan Library by the 9th September. Include your name with the bunting so that we can match your details to the online form you submitted.

  10. Visit us on Culture Night 20th September where we’ll be announcing the winners. Winners will also be contacted the week beginning 23rd September.
