Professor Gary Murphy admitted to the Royal Irish Academy
On Friday 24th of May, Professor Gary Murphy was formally admitted as Member of the Royal Irish Academy following his election last month. He is only the fourth member of the Faculty to hold this significant honour and the second member of our School, following in the footsteps of our late colleague, Prof Robert Elgie.
Few people embody the DCU spirit like Gary, as a graduate and co-worker he has been central to the growth of the University and Faculty since the 1990’s. He was a founding member of the School of Law and Government and the first Dean of Graduate Studies. His work on Irish political history is field defining, and his magnum opus Haughey is already an essential reference for anyone trying to understand the emergence of contemporary Ireland.
As a regular contributor on RTÉ radio and television and with a weekly column in the Irish Mail on Sunday, his distinctive voice is as recognisable to the general public as it is on campus. The School is extremely proud of Professor Murphy’s achievement and looks forward to many more years of his leadership, mentorship and friendship.
