Jivanta Schlotti is completing a co-authored manuscript on India: Statecraft and Foreign Policy which will cover key phases in India’s foreign policy since Independence and recent developments. The book will be published with Nomos and is aimed as a textbook for students.
A second focus has been the subject of cooperation and order at sea. This has taken the form of two edited books: Maritime Governance in South Asia (Ed.) World Scientific, Singapore, 2018 and Power, Politics and Maritime Governance in the Indian Ocean (ed) Routledge, London 2014.
Most recently, Jivanta contributed a chapter on “Island States and Ocean Geopolitics” to a book titled Maritime Sri Lanka: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives (World Scientific, Singapore, 2021). A podcast on the chapter and the book will be available at https://sea-control.simplecast.com/
Jivanta also works on India’s domestic politics. For example, “India’s 2014 General Elections: A Critical Realignment in Indian Politics?” co-authored with Subrata K. Mitra in Asian Survey, 2016. This draws upon arguments made in her book, Vision and Strategy in Indian Politics, Routledge, London 2012. Focused on an individual, the country’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, the book explores the structural constraints as well as the ideological and intellectual impulses that informed his policy decisions. Using insights from historical and new institutionalism, the book explores when and how a leader’s vision and strategy interact to produce policy outcomes that can shape political institutions over the decades.
