Erasmus Mundus Funding Awarded for New Joint International MA Programme

A new 24-month taught International Masters in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies (IMSISS) will begin in September 2017, jointly delivered by Dublin City University, the University of Glasgow (leading partner), and Charles University Prague.

This unique programme has been awarded €3.2 million (over five years) under the European Union’s Erasmus + scheme, and becomes the only joint international degree of its kind in the world. Led by Dr. James Fitzgerald of the School of Law and Government.  

IMSISS represents DCU’s first successful application for an Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Degree, helping not only to ensure the University’s status as an innovative and collaborative institution, but also maintaining its commitment to programme development.

IMSISS will offer scholarships to students from around the world and will provide students with the requisite tools to effectively address a variety of contemporary security issues, such as terrorism, environmental degradation, migration and cyber warfare. IMSISS will offer a wide range of work-based placements, while students will also benefit from the input of associate partners, including the United Nations Office of Information and Communication Technologies (UN-OICT), Prague Security Studies Institute, Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation and the DCU-based Network of Excellence on Violent Online Political Extremism (VOX-Pol).

As offered by the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) reviewer: “Security presents fundamental challenges that cannot be resolved by independent and sector-specific ways and need more coordinated and holistic approaches. The proposed programme is an innovative answer to that by providing interdisciplinary studies that join security, intelligence and strategy.”
