PhD Scholarship in Global Citizenship Education

Dublin City University (DCU) is a research-intensive, globally engaged, dynamic institution that is distinguished by both the quality and impact of its graduates and its focus on the translation of knowledge into societal and economic benefits. The Institute of Education (IoE) at DCU is the largest body of educational expertise and the only faculty of education in Ireland. The DCU Centre for Human Rights and Citizenship Education (CHRCE) champions educational policy and practice which promotes human rights, children’s rights, global justice and environmental sustainability. The Centre’s expertise extends across early childhood, primary, post-primary and third level education including teacher education. Committed to creative, cutting-edge and collaborative approaches, both in terms of pedagogy and research methodology, the Centre draws on the varied expertise of its members, steering committee, university context and national and international partnerships. 

DCU CHRCE is now offering a three year* fully-funded PhD Scholarship in Global Citizenship Education. Global Citizenship Education seeks to support learners to develop knowledge, skills and values in relation to some of the most pressing global issues with which the world is faced, including climate change, migration, and conflict.
*Should the duration of the research project exceed three years, the successful candidate will be expected to self-fund from this point onwards.

Scholarship Details

This scholarship is to support a doctoral candidate specialising in global citizenship education which might include education related to: climate change, human rights, child rights, citizenship, democracy, development, anti-racism, interculturalism, migration, sustainability, peace, conflict resolution, and action/activism. Proposals involving research which considers global citizenship education in formal education contexts will be prioritised. We would welcome proposals also which involve creative, innovative, participatory and multimodal research methods.

The successful candidate will be engaged full-time in their research and will be based on the St. Patrick’s Campus at DCU. In addition to completing their doctoral thesis, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to related research outputs in the form of academic papers, reports and/or presentations at conferences in Ireland and abroad, and to engage in professional development courses as required by DCU’s Academic Regulations for Postgraduate Degrees regulations and by the directorship of the DCU CHRCE.

An annual package of up to €26, 905 per annum for a maximum of 3 years comprising:

  • Fee contribution of up to €4,905 per annum

  • Tax-exempt stipend of €22,000 per annum.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should have:

  • a sound working knowledge of key issues in the field of global citizenship education, particularly those relating to formal education;

  • an undergraduate and Master’s degree (or very close to completion) in the field of education, equivalent to Lower Second Class Honours or above, from an approved University or an approved equivalent degree-awarding body;

  • the ability to conceptualise research projects pertinent to global citizenship education;

  • high level competence in written and oral communication through English;

  • the ability to work independently and collaboratively in meeting demanding research goals.

Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed. It should also be noted that the award is contingent on the applicant meeting all the requirements for admission to doctoral studies at DCU (www.dcu.ie/instituteofeducation/phdmasters-research-application).

  • Full curriculum vitae, including a list of publications (if any) as co-author

  • Draft research proposal using the Scholarship Recruitment Form template below. The purpose of this draft proposal is to allow the candidate to demonstrate the necessary competencies. Following the selection process, the proposal may undergo substantial changes and refinement, and must ultimately be approved by DCU CHRCE.

In addition, please attach:

  • A copy of your Master’s dissertation or a link to an electronic copy if it is hosted on an institutional repository. If the candidate is close to completion, a statement including information about the Master’s programme and projected time of completion can be included in the cover letter.

Closing date for receipt of applications is 5pm (Irish time) on Monday 16th September, 2024.

Interviews are scheduled for the week beginning 7th October, 2024.
