Mathematical Literacy, throughout and beyond education in focus at DCU's Institute of Education

Mathematical Literacy, throughout and beyond education is the theme of the seventh conference on Research in Mathematics Education taking place at DCU's Institute of Education, St Patrick's Campus on Friday and Saturday, October 11th & 12th.

The biennial conference is supported by the Centre for Advancement of STEM Teaching and Learning (CASTeL) and the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA).

The Mathematics Education Conference is committed to creating a stage for sharing ideas and best practices in the field of mathematics teaching, and exchanging findings of current research in mathematics education.

The 2019 conference theme Mathematical Literacy, throughout and beyond education aims to foreground learner's engagement with mathematics at all stages of the education system, and their development of mathematical proficiency within and beyond formal classroom settings.

The conference is intended as a forum to discuss the latest issues and trends emerging in mathematical education including;

  • The discussion of issues pertaining to mathematics teaching and learning across the continuum, from Early Years to Third level and beyond
  • Consideration of future directions for mathematics education research in light of recent national developments and international trends
  • Improving collaborations between mathematics education communities within Ireland and in other countries

Dr Paola Valero from the University of Stockholm will deliver the keynote presentation on Friday, October 11th.

Dr Valero's research explores the intersection between the mathematical and scientific rationality, the education in mathematics and science, and society.

On Saturday, October 12th Dr. Natthapoj Vincent Trakulphadetkrai, University of Reading will deliver his keynote. Dr Trakulphadetkrai's research interests are centred around the use of storytelling (particularly in the story picture book format) to help enrich mathematics teaching and learning experiences.

He founded the MathsThroughStories.org initiative back in 2015, and officially launched its website in March 2017.
