Academic biography

Dr Joseph Travers is an associate professor in the School of Inclusive and Special Education. He is Director of the DCU Centre for Inclusive Pedagogy. He was the first Head of School (2016-2022).  Previous to this he was Director of Special Education (2008-2016) in St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra joining the College in 1998.   He is a former primary school teacher (mainstream, special class, learning support/resource teacher for Travellers). He is a graduate of Coláiste Mhuire, Marino (B.Ed), Trinity College (Dip. in Ed. Mgt), St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra (Dip. in Sp.Ed), NUI Maynooth (M.Ed) and Queen’s University Belfast (Ed.D). He has published in the areas of policy and practice in special education/learning support for mathematics, inclusion, leadership and early intervention. Dr Travers has been principal investigator on research projects for the National Council for Special Education (NCSE) and for the Department of Education and Skills (DES).  He teaches across a range of teacher education programmes from initial to postgraduate Diploma, Masters and Doctoral level.
