New MA in Irish Studies

Dublin City University has launched a new Masters in Irish Studies, offering students an innovative and modern approach to learning what it means to be Irish in the 21st century. The course will be delivered online, allowing greater flexibility and opportunity to engage with a diverse and international student group.

Leading academics will challenge students to engage with key questions and debates in the study of Irish culture and enable them to understand what it means to be Irish in contemporary Ireland whilst also exploring the past. In doing so, they will examine the stories Irish tell, the spaces they construct and the landscape they inhabit, the communities, associations and political groupings they create, the religions they practice, the music and sport they play, and the creative and literary journeys they make.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Will Murphy, Programme Chair, commented,

“We are delighted to be launching this programme and feel it is particularly timely as Ireland prepares to engage with a period of historical centenary commemorations.

Six course modules will challenge students to engage with complex, contested and dynamic issues and debates in Irish culture and individuals will come away with their own interpretation of modern Irish culture, in Ireland and abroad.
