Rise in CAO applications across Humanities and Social Sciences
First preference CAO applications for environmental courses rose by 70%
Despite the uncertainty of a pandemic, latest reports showed applications for third level courses have gone up by 8.5%. Very significantly, first-preference applications for courses related to environmental issues have risen substantially by 70 percent.
Future-focused skills
DCU recognises an increasing need for graduates with future-focused skills to benefit society. That is why earlier this year the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences launched two new courses related to climate issues and environmental challenges as part of the DCU Futures project (under the Human Capital Initiative).
Climate and Environmental Sustainability
Our new BA in Climate and Environmental Sustainability is delivered through the lens of geographical sciences. This innovative programme will prepare students for work in climate and environment-related fields and is delivered by the School of History and Geography.
Global Challenges
Our new BSc in Global Challenges is a unique programme that integrates social science and technology studies and takes a challenge-based learning approach. Students will benefit from expertise coming from both the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering and Computing. This course will equip graduates to develop socially effective technological solutions to real problems.
Growing demand for DCU courses in communications and media
The CAO also reported a 58% increase in first-preference journalism applications, a 27% increase in applications for social sciences and an 11% increase in arts applications.
DCU’s national reputation in communications and journalism studies remains unmatched as first preference applications to our Journalism course grew by 18%; Communications Studies increased by a fifth (21%) and applications to Joint Honours (Media Studies) were up by almost 60%.
