Call for Submissions: Dublin LGBTQI+ Refugees/Asylum Seekers Conference
Urgent call for submissions
DCU’s research group EROSS is calling for papers by 30 October and 6 November 2020 for the upcoming online Conferences on LGBTQI+ Refugees/Asylum Seekers taking place in Paris and Dublin respectively next spring, in 2021.
4.2 million stateless
More than four million refugees and asylum seekers were awaiting a decision on their claims for refugee status by the end of last year (2019). That’s the equivalent of an entire population of some countries like Croatia, Moldova or Kuwait, waiting.
Harassment and discrimination
Among those is a vulnerable group of LGBTQI+ with horrendous stories of imprisonment, torture and trauma. Imagine having committed no crime but purely because of sexual orientation or gender identity, you are unable to live freely in your own country? According to the UN Human Rights Council:
“In many countries, LGBTQI + people are subject to active harassment and discrimination, as well as to arbitrary arrests and detentions, or killings, orchestrated by community, regional or government authorities because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. These LGBTIQ+ people have no choice but to take refuge elsewhere.”
Inviting submissions
The LGBT Asylum Seekers Conference will provide a platform to discuss the issues facing this extremely vulnerable group of people. You are invited to submit papers dealing with relevant LGBTQI+ Refugees/Asylum Seekers and aspects of:
- Displacements (cultural and geographic)
- Identity, openness, and disclosure
- Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI)
- Systems of asylum, migration and integration
- Local queer communities, acknowledgement, access and acceptance
- Art, artivism and activism
