Research Day

Research Day 2024

The Faculty of Engineering and Computing Research Day, held on Tuesday, October 15th, provided a platform for postgraduate students across the three schools within the faculty - the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, the School of Electronic Engineering, and the School of Computing - to showcase their exceptional work, talent, and knowledge.

This annual event is a testament to the unwavering dedication, motivation, and tireless efforts of our students, as they come together to share their groundbreaking research and engage with industry experts, further cementing the faculty's commitment to fostering an environment of academic excellence and innovation. Students and academics from across the three schools within the Faculty, had the opportunity to display their research posters, attend talks from leading industry experts, and engage in informal networking.

The day started off with a tea and coffee reception in the Stokes Foyer, with research boards on display for the attendees. This was followed by an opening talk given by the faculty’s Associate Dean for Research, Prof. Conor Brennan.

The talks from industry guests commenced with an inspiring talk by Dr. Sinéad McCluskey, Founder and Managing Partner of Balmain Medical. From graduating from the DCU School of Biotechnology and starting her industry career at Pfizer, to founding Balmain Medical and serving on our Industry Advisory Board, Dr. Sinéad McCluskey shared many engaging insights into the field.

During the Horizon Scanning session that followed the first poster presentations, DCU academics Dr. Anderson Augusto Simiscuka, Dr. Inam Ul Ahad, and Dr. Gerard Marks led the audience in a discussion about future research and its potential societal impact in the coming decades. The final speaker was Dr. Frank Smyth, CTO and co-founder of Pilot Photonics, a photonics product development company based in DCU Alpha, who design and build unique laser and photonic integrated circuit (PIC) based products.

The event concluded with a final poster board session, where attendees had the opportunity to engage in conversation, showcase their work, and build connections within the industry. In addition, prizes were awarded to the best poster presentations, including an additional Good Citizen Award.

Prof Conor Brennan spoke about the event, saying:

“It was really great to see so many of our researchers taking the time to present their work and to meet and interact with each other.  There was a great atmosphere of engagement throughout the day, especially during the poster sessions. Huge congratulations to all our award recipients,  each one was richly deserved! Finally, a very big thanks to our invited speakers who gave up so much of their time to come in and share their experiences and  insight with us.”

Congratulations to all the students and faculty who participated and contributed to making this year's Research Day an outstanding success.
