DCU Faculty of Engineering and Computing held annual Final Year Projects Expo 2024

With a total of 224 projects from final year students, the Faculty of Engineering and Computing at DCU’s Final Year Projects Expo 2024 showcased a vast range of talent and hard work.

The annual event has been running for over 30 years and is one of the university’s largest events. Students from each programme within the faculty have the opportunity to showcase the sheer knowledge and cutting-edge skills they have obtained throughout their time studying at DCU to leading industry members and employers. In addition to this, the Expo is a great opportunity for students to network with industry professionals from the top engineering and tech companies, which often leads to students receiving job offers post-event.

The Expo 2024 saw a large number of diverse projects, including many that will be of great environmental and societal benefit. From projects such as ‘MediScanAI’ which uses Django to detect mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression, to ‘Agricultural Toolkit that Aims to Reduce Carbon Emissions’ which is of great environmental benefit, to ‘SafeJourney’ which is an app that detects drowsiness and fatigue in order to prevent road fatalities, the talent was very apparent. These are just some of the highly impressive projects that have been worked on endlessly for the past year by students.

The event itself began with a short breakfast for industry members, staff, and students in the U building where students could converse with these professionals and establish connections. Following on, an opening talk was held by DCU President, Prof. Daire Keogh, the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Computing, Dr Jennifer Bruton, and lastly, Conal O’Donnell, COO of Ergo who was the lead sponsor of the Expo.

Dr Jennifer Bruton spoke about the Expo, saying:

“The DCU Faculty of Engineering & Computing's Final Year Project Expo encapsulates the quality of what we do in the faculty. It is the culmination of the research-informed teaching from our academic staff, the technical expertise of our technical support staff, and the industry-facing nature of our curricula.

The remarkable diversity of our students’ projects truly highlights the wide range of knowledge application, problem-solving skills, creativity, and innovation that we pride ourselves on cultivating here at DCU. These skills and attributes, together with the real-world exposure via the INTRA placement supported by our industry and enterprise partners, will be pivotal for our graduates to shape a better world and step up as leaders in the Computing and Engineering sectors.”

The event was then moved over to the computing labs in the McNulty Building, where students had their projects on display for industry professionals and staff to view and engage in conversations about.

Conal O’Donnell, Chief Operating Officer at Ergo, commented on the event:

“As the COO of Ergo, I understand the concerns our clients face in today’s tech industry climate.
