DCU hosted an interactive Engineering Camp for Engineers Week 2024

25 secondary school students from across Ireland explored the exciting world of Engineering during an Engineering camp on DCU’s Glasnevin campus organised in conjunction with Engineers Ireland.

Last week, the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering welcomed students to DCU for a 3-day camp. After a tour of the labs, the students took part in an ‘intro to engineering course’ before participating in a disintegration project. They learned how a product is designed by taking it apart and examining how it is put together. Students worked on DCU's "Green Power" race car where they assembled and disassembled portions of the race car and identified and measured key components.

On the second day, students used the SolidWorks computer-aided design system to design an engineering component and manufactured this component using a 3D printer. Students learned about pneumatics and control in DCU's state-of-the-art pneumatics laboratory and built circuits using industrial components.

On the final day, students went on a field trip to our industrial partner site to see how a large multinational engineering company functions and to get an insight into the day-to-day life of an engineer working in industry. The programme concluded with a tour of the DCU campus and a Q&A session.

Thank you to Engineers Ireland for helping organise this camp.
