DCU Mechatronic Engineering Students Excel at Huawei's 2024 European Seeds for the Future Competition

Two Mechatronic Engineering students from DCU were met with great success after taking part in Huawei’s 2024 European Seeds for the Future project in Rome from the 1st to 5th of July.

Students Ciara O’Reilly and Chirag Joshi were among the ten very successful students who represented Ireland in this fantastic project, resulting in each of them receiving €1,000 to aid their STEM studies.

Team Anaphero was announced as the regional champions, and will proceed to the prestigious Tech4Good global competition final in China, scheduled for early next year. The team was made up of five Irish students, one being Ciara O’Reilly from DCU. The remaining four students included Tiarnan O'Rourke from University College Dublin; Dylan Hussain from Technological University of Dublin; Luke O'Sullivan from University College Cork, and Eoin Creavin from University College Dublin.

Team Anaphero's innovative project centred on creating a wearable device that quickly notifies parents and caregivers when a child exhibits early signs of anaphylactic shock. The device employs sensors to detect allergic reaction symptoms and utilises 5G network and AI technology for real-time analysis and connectivity, enabling prompt alerts.

Another highly impressive group including Chirag Joshi, Team Upstream, made it into the European region's Top 10. The project utilises AI, cloud technology, 5G, and sensors to analyse water quality in real-time and promptly notify residents when the water should be boiled before consumption.

When speaking about the experience, Chirag Joshi said:

“It was a fantastic event! I really enjoyed working on our start-up project with other talented individuals from Ireland. I learnt a lot from the professionals in tech, especially about AI and its use in ideas that could benefit the people around us. This was an experience I will never forget - I would definitely apply for the competition again!"

Ciara O’Reilly also spoke very highly of the experience, saying:

“The Huawei Seeds for the Future program surpassed my expectations! It provided an excellent platform to utilise the knowledge and skills acquired during my Mechatronic Engineering studies in ways that can enhance people's health and overall quality of life. The initiative gathered a diverse group of students from various academic backgrounds and countries, fostering a rich cultural environment where innovative ideas could thrive.”
