Computer Applications Student Wins Intel Award

Congratulations to Laura Browne, winner at the first ever Intel Galileo 3rd Level Technology Competition on Friday 1st May.  This competition was open to all 3rd level undergraduate students in all Ireland and Laura, a Computer Applications student, stormed to overall victory.

The competition invited students to create projects based on the Irish designed Intel Galileo board.  The Intel Galileo board is the first in a family of Arduino – certified development and prototyping boards based on Intel architecture and specifically designed for markets, students, educators and DIY electronics enthusiast.

The first round of the competition involved students submitting their project ideas and a short video summary online, a shortlist of finalist projects was selected.  The 6 final projects came together for a special showcase in co-ordination with Techweek 2015.

Laura’s winning project ‘Power Scout Energy Monitor’ uses the Intel Galileo, GROVE base shield and GROVE energy sensors to monitor the energy usage of various electrical appliances in the home.  This energy data is collected every 30 seconds and stored in a MySQL database hosted on Amazon Web Services. This energy information is displayed on separate graphs by querying the database ising plot.ly and python.

Well done Laura, we’ll be keeping an eye on you!

Laura will be displaying her PowerScout project at the Final Year Projects Expo on Wednesday 27th May 2015.
