Dave Rudden is DCU Young People, Children and Education (YPCE) Artist in Residence 2023

DCU is delighted to announce writer Dave Rudden has been awarded as Young People, Children and Education (YPCE) Artist in Residence 2023 in DCU Institute of Education.  This residency is funded by the Arts Council as part of the Young People, Children and Education (YPCE) Residencies scheme 2023.

During this one year residency Dave will creatively support DCU staff and students of initial teacher and early childhood education. He will explore opportunities for different faculties in DCU to share learning and events. Examples include pairing students from the YA and Fiction Masters and the Institute of Education to develop complex, current and diverse reading lists, or pairing Creative Writing MA students with Institute of Education students to support modules like Narrative, Imagination and Pedagogy. He will facilitate collaborations with DCU hosted organisations Poetry Ireland and Fighting Words with education modules.

His enthusiasm, as well his rich background in storytelling and creative writing, make it so easy for him to connect with a wide range of modules. Dave is highly flexible in the way that he works so he’s involved in supporting students in a variety of creative and artistic projects. It’s hard to choose a highlight but we are particularly looking forward to his storytelling session next March with four hundred and sixty B.Ed. students and a group of local school children.”

Dave Rudden Biography 

Dave Rudden is an author, performer and creative writing teacher based in Dublin. Dave has delivered talks, bespoke workshops and author events in hundreds of schools, universities, libraries and festivals, both nationally and internationally.

He is a Creative Fellow of UCD and mentors students for various organisations including Words Ireland and CBI’s Raising Voices – a national mentorship focusing on uplifting marginalised voices.

As DCU Writer-in-Residence 2022, he delivered workshops as part of the Write to Read programme and Fighting Words, as well as open day consultations for staff and students, a direct mentorship scheme for one student and one staff member, and large-scale talks for local schools.

About YPCE Residencies

YPCE Residencies support artists or arts organisations to spend an academic year in residence in a higher-education institution in Ireland that provides initial teacher education (primary, post-primary or further education).  The residencies are open to all artform and arts-practice areas and aim to: 

• Provide opportunities for artists to develop their skills and experience in education settings, and to develop their artistic work in a collaborative and supportive environment   
• Provide opportunities for teaching staff/lecturers in initial teacher education and early childhood education and care to engage with practising artists in creating bespoke, creative initiatives with and for their students   
• Support future teachers and early-years educators to engage with practising artists as part of their learning experience   
• Support future teachers and early-years educators to develop the skills and confidence to facilitate arts experiences for the children in the schools and settings where they work, and to champion the arts in these settings.
