Portraits of Ms Justice Mella Carroll and Mr Tom Hardiman by Vera Klute

 

Award-winning and highly regarded artist Vera Klute was selected to create portraits of former DCU Chancellors Tom Hardiman and Ms. Justice Mella Carroll, following an invited competition process in June 2020. These portraits are proudly displayed on All Hallows campus, joining the esteemed collection of portraits of former Chancellors of the University.

These portraits by Vera Klute celebrate the legacy and contributions of two remarkable leaders who helped shape the identity and success of Dublin City University.

Ms Justice Mella Carroll

Ms. Justice Mella Carroll served as Chancellor of DCU from 2001 to 2006. As a pioneering lawyer in a male-dominated profession, she was known for her insight, energy, and prudence. Her intelligence, dynamism, and social awareness, reflected in many of her court decisions, also helped shape DCU’s unique sense of community and exemplary academic standards. Chancellor Carroll's tenure was marked by her unwavering integrity and honesty.

Mr Tom Hardiman

Tom Hardiman, DCU's first Chancellor from 1998 to 2001, was a towering figure in Irish society, contributing significantly to Ireland across various dimensions. He played a pivotal role in establishing DCU as a modern, dynamic university and was particularly passionate about the university’s development of Japanese language and culture studies.
