History Workshops-November 2024

Join us for a series of four lectures / workshops titled "Independence Struggle of 1916 - 1923," focusing particularly on North Dublin. This course delves into the significant period of Irish Independence from 1916 to 1923.

 

Venue:  DCU in the Community (Unit 1 - Shangan Court, Shangan Road, Ballymun, Dublin 9, Eircode: D09 E8H4). The DCU in the Community venue is on Shangan Road, behind the Ballymun Civic Centre and after the Virgin Mary Church and school.

The lectures will be approximately 90 minutes, and will comprise extensive slide shows, distribution of material and the use of online resources such as Census and military archives, as well as prescribed reading material.

Lecturer : Eamon Delaney.
Historian, former diplomat and author of many books including the best selling 'An Accidental Diplomat'. Eamon is the director of a military history project The Lion and the Shamrock.


Lecture 1:  The run up to the 1916 Rising. Thursday 7 November 2024, from 10:30 am to 12pm.
 

  • The long push for Home Rule beforehand and the crisis of 1912. 
  • The rise of Republicanism and the Gaelic revival. 
  • The Easter Rising itself, the executions and the aftermath. 
  • World War I as a crucial backdrop. 
     

Lecture 2:  The move towards a guerrilla war in 1919. Thursday 14 November 2024, from 10:30 am to 12pm.

  • The Sinn Fein Dail.
  • The withdrawal from Westminster.
  • Unionist opposition.
  • Attempts to create a settlement.
  • The Conscription crisis of 1918.
  • The seeking of international assistance and the recognition of an independent Ireland. 
     

Lecture 3:  The War of Independence, particularly in North Dublin. Thursday 21 November 2024, from 10:30am to 12pm.
 

  • The attacks on police stations.
  • The burning of Balbriggan, and of the Custom House.
  • The influence of Micheal Collins and Eamon De Valera and the many other prominent figures. 
  • The feminists and the Land question. 
  • The move to a truce in 1921.
     

Lecture 4:  The Civil War and how it happened.  The Civil War and how it happened
Thursday 28 November 2024, from 10:30 am to 12pm.
 

  • The signing of the Anglo Irish Treaty and the bitter divisions over it. 
  • The split in the Cabinet and in the Dail and then in the country. 
  • The attack on the Four Courts. 
  • The assassinations and reprisals throughout North Dublin, the moves to a ceasefire. 
  • The aftermath and the lasting bitterness.
