SDG Conference Vienna
Maria Barry from the CHRCE and the School of STEM Education, Innovation & Global Studies joined over 60 delegates in Vienna last week for the “Get Up and Goals” conference on Migration. Maria was part of the Irish group, led by Mella Cusack (national coordinator for Get Up and Goals in Ireland) invited to participate. They were also joined by Majella McSharry, from the School of Human Development in the IoE and Fiona King from the National College of Art & Design. All four are members of the Ubuntu network.
The conference brought together teachers, teacher educators, local authority professionals and NGO staff from across 12 European countries. It was an opportunity to share good practice, explore a variety of initiatives, present relevant research and make connections with a variety of actors engaged in global citizenship education within formal education. Maria and her colleagues facilitated two workshops for the conference delegates that focused on the theme of Migration and GCE from an Irish experience and through the lens of curricular and policy opportunities, initiatives within initial teacher education and research on classroom practice.
Get Up and Goals is co-funded by the European Union. Together with organisations from partner countries (Austria, Italy, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Portugal, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Spain, Hungary, Romania, Poland and Bulgaria), this project aims to promote and test new educational paths related to the Sustainable development Goals (SDGs) by including four cross-cutting topics of the 2030 Agenda within the subjects taught at school. They are: Gender inequalities, Climate change, Global migrations and International inequalities.
