Employer Panel Discussion for Law & Government - A Great Success

DCU Careers Service were delighted to host an employer panel discussion for students within the School of Law and Government.

The featured panellists included Aoife Egan, Education Manager of European Movement; Síne Finn (BL), Barrister at The Bar of Ireland; Patrick Rooney, Deputy Director of Human Resources at the Department of Foreign Affairs. Students heard how each panelist outlined their career journey up to their current roles highlighting the nonlinear nature of careers.

The specificity of each of these career pathways meant that the panelists provided different resources on how to locate and begin pursuing opportunities within the respective fields. Key requirements like having a second EU language, leveraging their transferable skills, further study where necessary were discussed in detail enabling students to have actionable next steps after the event.

Colm Bourke, Careers Service Consultant who organised the panel, noted that these events are incredibly beneficial for students who get to hear about the career journeys of successful people and realise how normal it is to not have everything figured out at a specific time. This realisation coupled with the amount of information they gain on career options and making quality applications allows them to leave with more self-efficacy and confidence.

At the end of the event, students had the opportunity to mingle with the guests and ask questions at the end of the event.
