Academic biography
Dr Vijai Kumar Gupta is an Associate Professor at the School of Biotechnology. Before joining DCU in January 2024, Vijai worked as a Senior Fellow and Group Leader at the Biorefining and Advanced Material Research Centre & Centre for Safe and Improved Foods at SRUC, Edinburgh, UK. Vijai has almost 15+ years of experience in teaching and research. His research interests include Biomass Valorisation, Microbial Engineering Biotechnologies, Functional Microbiomes, Advanced Bioprocessing and Fermentation Technologies and Bioactive Natural Products. Following his PhD in 2009, Vijai has worked at various national/international universities, including MITS University, India; University of Galway, Ireland; Tallinn Technical University/Estonian University of Life Science, Estonia; UM6P Morocco; and SRUC, UK.
Vijai is the Fellow of Linnaean Society, UK; Fellow of Mycological Society of India; Fellow of Indian Mycological Association; Fellow of the Academy of Microbiological Sciences, India; Pravasi Fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, India; and Associate Fellow of the National Academy of Biological Sciences India.
To date, he has mentored/supervised many undergraduates, master's students, PhD researchers, and postdoctoral researchers. He is the editor of Biofuel Research Journal, Critical Reviews in Biotechnology, Environmental Chemistry Letters, Microbial Cell Factories, Microbiome, and Mycosphere. Also, he has edited a good few books in his area of expertise for Elsevier, Wiley-Blackwell, Taylor and Francis, Springer-Nature, and CABI, UK. His multidisciplinary research has yielded several high-quality scientific articles (including Lancet, Nature, and Trends-Cell Press portfolio journal articles), and his work has been widely cited in the field (Google Scholar h-index 80).
