Emerging Leaders Programme - Angela

My Experience as a Participant on the DCU Emerging Leaders Programme

Angela ELP

Angela Flanagan - 2024/2025 Emerging Leaders Participant

As a proud DCU alum, I have always had a strong connection to the university, being selected as part of the 2024/25 cohort of the Emerging Leaders Programme (ELP) was a proud moment. Not only did this programme offer me the perfect opportunity to grow professionally, it also reconnected me with the vibrant DCU community that’s loved so much.

After five years building my career in a company I loved, I decided to embrace a new challenge and moved companies for the first time in September 2024. Starting fresh felt like stepping onto a blank canvas - both exciting and daunting. I knew I would need to prove myself in a new role whilst standing out in a larger organisation filled with talented professionals. I asked myself: How will I demonstrate my value and become someone trusted to take on impactful opportunities?

In the midst of this, I came across the Emerging Leaders Programme. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to gain the skills and confidence I needed to thrive in this pivotal stage of my career, which made applying a no brainer.

Why I Applied to the DCU Emerging Leaders Programme

Not only would this support my transition into a new role but would allow me to push myself in growing as a leader. As my career develops, my long-term goal is to step into a management position as I believe my strengths lie in empowering and guiding others.

Coming from a male-dominated industry and working with buyers in like-minded industries, I’ve faced my share of challenges as a woman. I am keen to learn from leaders with diverse backgrounds and gain tools to navigate and thrive in these environments while remaining authentic to myself in a professional setting. More importantly, as a future sales leader, I hoped to build on my skillset to empower other women to pursue their own ambitious goals and advocate for themselves in the workplace.

Luckily the application process was straightforward, and after a brief interview I was offered a place on the programme.

Highlights of the DCU Emerging Leaders Programme

Expanding Professional Connections Through Networking

Networking can sometimes feel cliché, however this programme is showing me just how impactful it can be when approached with intention and curiosity. By applying these learnings, I’ve encouraged myself to reach out to sales leaders who previously completed the programme to gain insights into their experiences and understand how their teams operate. I have made a point to nurture my existing network, attend events solo and expand my connections with purpose. This has not only provided me with valuable advice but offered me a glimpse into potential opportunities for the future. Connecting with alumni from diverse industries has been invaluable, providing perspectives and ideas I wouldn’t have encountered otherwise.

Leadership Skills from Practical & Actionable Sessions

Every session offers not just inspiration but real, practical advice from industry-leading DCU alumni. From workshops on authentic leadership, to case studies with international partners, each experience is designed to provide tools that can be implemented immediately.

What sets these sessions apart is their interactivity. We are encouraged to engage by presenting on the sessions that resonate with our goals which sparks open conversations and foster meaningful discussions bridging the gap between theory and practice.

Insights Personality Test: A Game-Changer

One standout session for me has been working with organisational psychologist Gay White on the Insights personality test. It was fascinating to dive into our personal strengths, weaknesses and how our personality shapes different approaches to leadership. Already recognising the importance of where to “dial up” or “dial down” parts of your personality has been a game changer for me. It has given me an understanding of others’ styles and how to communicate effectively - a skill I will carry with me throughout my career.

Mentorship & Coaching

As part of the programme, we were paired with a mentor who had previously completed the programme and this has been such a valuable resource to ensure we are getting the most out of each session. Outside of this, participants are offered free 1:1 professional coaching! This is aimed to help us focus on our overall career goals and ensure accountability in tracking towards this.

Flexibility and Accessibility

What makes this programme even more enjoyable is how easy it is to fit into my schedule. The sessions are planned well in advance, which gives plenty of time to balance work commitments. It is the perfect mix of online and in-person sessions both on campus (yes, Nubar goujons did make it on the agenda).

What you get out of the programme is all about what you put in; in terms of workload, there is no heavy preparation involved - it is all about showing up, being present and learning from those around you.

Looking Ahead: The Future Benefits of the DCU Emerging Leaders Programme

With multiple events across the year and programmes like this, it is clear the emphasis our alumni office places on fostering a strong sense of community.

Being part of it again is reminding me how much I value that connection. Not only am I looking forward to the rest of the programme, I am especially excited to give back to future cohorts and share what I have learned.

If you are considering applying for the DCU Emerging Leaders Programme, I cannot recommend it enough. It is a fantastic opportunity to take your career to the next level.

You may also be lucky enough to make new friends and reconnect with old ones along the way too.
