What did your time in DCU mean to you?
I gained so many things from my time in DCU. Firstly, I gained confidence. I was never the kid who put their hand up but in DCU I became treasurer of a number of societies. Getting involved in societies gave me real world experience. I was involved with two new societies and it was inspiring to see that people could start these from nothing and grow them simply based on their passions. DCU gave me belief that I can do anything.I also made amazing friends and I obviously learned a lot about accounting too! The educational aspect is just a small part of what DCU meant to me though. At DCU I felt part of a family and made amazing friends and great networks.
Why are you proud to be a DCU graduate?
I’m proud to be a DCU graduate because no matter who you are, you can make friends and everybody can fit in. That sense of community and support comes from all different departments and parts of DCU. I’m also proud to be associated with a university that’s at the forefront in terms of social change with initiatives like being the world’s first Autism Friendly University or getting rid of single use plastic on campus.
How have you stayed in touch with DCU since graduation?
I mainly keep in touch with DCU’s Access Programme to let them know how I’m getting on. I’ve also been back on campus to do graduate recruitment fairs for my company. I really enjoy speaking with students again. I also keep in touch with my friends and have a great alumni network. A lot of really amazing people have come through DCU and I’ll always use that as a base to connect with people when I meet them.
I follow DCU on social media and I love to keep in touch and to hear the latest news from DCU and to hear stories of other alumni who inspire me. I also love hearing about the brilliant events back on campus that DCU alumni can attend.
Why do you keep in touch with DCU?
I keep in touch because of a sense of family and community that doesn’t go away – you can’t just leave your family and your community. Being a DCU graduate, it’s a great network to have going into the professional world. Being able to talk to other people who are going through or who have gone through the same transition to the professional world is brilliant. DCU is a bigger part of you than you might realise and you just don’t know how you might need that network in the future.
The more successful you become too, I also believe that it’s really important to give back and support other students just like you.
