DCU Alumni Awardee 2024 Michael Langan

Michael Langan is a vice president in the Client Computing Group (CCG) of the Intel Corporation and general manager of its NPU (Neural Processing Unit) Intellectual Property, both Hardware and Software.

On graduation, Michael started his career in low power System on a Chip (SoC)  design for start-up Irish semiconductor manufacturer Parthus Technologies. Parthus completed an IPO in 2000 and became part of the CEVA group in 2002 .

Under the CEVA-DSP banner, his work focused on the design of low power Digital Signal Processor (DSP) technology, working with the future founders of Habana Technologies while there.

From 2006, Michael worked with GloNav, a fabless semiconductor company developing GPS and other satellite navigation technologies which was acquired by ST-Ericsson in 2009.

He moved to Intel in 2011 as SoC Engineering Manager and then in 2017, he joined the Intel Movidius team and started the NPU IP team with the mission of delivering AI accelerator Intellectual Property (IP) for all Client Platforms. The first solution was delivered to market shipping over 35m units.

Michael is now leading the team with the next generations of NPU IP in various stages of development. The work will make Intel the leader in AI PC technology which will include dedicated high-performance processing components that are specifically designed for accelerating AI workloads.

This will enable multiple different new AI workloads on AI PC, with Microsoft and other partners, such as Microsoft Effects Package (MEP), Recall, Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLM). It is expected that over 100m units will be shipped in 2025, across multiple generations of the IP, with the CCG’s market revenue of approximately $30B.
