DCU Alumni Awardee Dr Anne Dolan
Anne Dolan is Associate Professor and lecturer in primary geography with the Department of Learning, Society and Religious Education in Mary Immaculate College.
On graduation in 1987, Anne taught for six years in Corpus Christi National School, Drumcondra. She was then granted a career break to work in teacher education in Lesotho in Southern Africa.
On her return she continued to work in development education as an education officer with Irish Aid in Dublin and then as Director of the International Centre for Development Studies in University of Galway.
Since 2000, Anne has worked in teacher education. An enthusiastic educator, Anne is particularly interested in creative approaches to geography, interdisciplinary collaboration and the use of the arts in geographical explorations.
As a researcher, Anne focuses on outdoor learning, sustainability, global citizenship education, climate change education and children’s concepts of place. She is the director of the M.Ed. in Education for Sustainability and Global Citizenship in Mary Immaculate College.
Anne is the author/editor of a number of important texts in addressing the role of education in sustainability and diversity - ‘Teaching the Sustainable Development Goals to Young Citizens: A focus on hope, respect, empathy and advocacy’ (2024), Teaching Climate Change in Primary Schools: An Interdisciplinary Approach (2022), Powerful Primary Geography: A Toolkit for 21st Century Learning (2020) and You, Me and Diversity: Picturebooks for Teaching Development and Intercultural Education (2014).
Anne was recently appointed as Chair of the NCCA development group for the new Leaving Certificate Subject: Climate Action and Sustainable Development. She credits St. Patrick’s College for lighting her flame of passion for education.
