Topic:

'Thinking, drinking and responsibility'

"Responsible drinking" of alcohol is often considered the right thing to do but, in this lecture, I question this idea. By reference to some evidence and reasoned argument, I want to suggest that less emphasis needs to be given to drinking responsibly and more encouragement needs to be given to thinking critically about alcohol use.

'Waves, sound and the physics of hearing'

Have you ever thought about how you can hear someone when they speak or why explosions in movies are always followed by a high pitched ringing sound? We are going to look at a few key ideas that describe how this is possible. We will look at the principles of wave motion, the properties we can use to define a wave, the types of waves, how the ear actually works and why noises are quieter the further away you are.
