Beaumont Hospital is a large academic teaching hospital. It is located 3 km from DCU Glasnevin campus. We provide emergency and acute care services across 54 medical specialties to the local community. In addition, we are a Designated Cancer Centre and the Regional Treatment Centre for Ear, Nose and Throat, and Gastroenterology. We are also the National Referral Centre for Neurosurgery and Neurology, Renal Transplantation, and Cochlear Implantation.

We employ approximately 4,000 staff and have 842 beds. We have strong academic links with both the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Dublin City University and with other academic institutions in respect of other healthcare professional training and research.

The Bon Secours Private Hospital in Dublin is an independent acute care hospital located in Glasnevin, Dublin and is part of the Bon Secours Health System. The hospital is renowned for the quality of medical service provision and combines the latest technologies and approaches with traditional values, compassion and personalised holistic care. It was the first hospital in Ireland to receive formal Quality Accreditation by Joint Commission International. It was also the first private hospital in Ireland to receive Endoscopy Accreditation from the Joint Advisory Group in 2016. The Bon Secours is a Level 2 hospital comprising of 90 Inpatient beds, 35 Surgical Day Ward beds (including Cath Lab), 21 Endoscopy beds, 10 Oncology Day places, 10 Acute Medical Assessment Unit places, 4 HDU beds, 4 Major and 3 Minor Operating Theatres and a comprehensive range of ancillary diagnostic, treatment and support services. The hospital attracts over 80,000 patients with a further 125,000 outpatients per annum. 

 In 2022, the Bon Secours introduced the “Nurse Graduate programme”. This 2-year programme is for newly qualified nurses. It aims to enhance the clinical skills of the newly qualified nurse and to become part of a dynamic and patient focused team.

In 2025, BSD is introducing a new philosophy and practice model of nursing known as Careful Nursing. 2025 will also begin the rollout of an Electronic Health Record “Bons Connect”.

Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown (CHB) is part of the RCSI Hospital Group Dublin North East. It is a major academic teaching hospital serving a catchment population of 331,000 extending into West Dublin, Meath and Kildare. Emergency services are provided 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. The hospital provides a range of services – surgical, medical, endoscopy, coronary care, intensive care, long term care, outpatient services, day care services including diabetic day centre, radiology, diagnostic and support services. Acute psychiatric care is under governance of Primary Community and Continuing Care (PCCC). Connolly Hospital is committed to providing high quality safe care underpinned by a single effective corporate and clinical governance structure whereby the needs of our patients are met using evidenced- based practice. At Connolly hospital, the care provided is accordance with the HIQA National Standards for Safer Better Healthcare and in alignment with the National Committee on Clinical Excellence, the National Clinical Programmes and the National Cancer Control Programme Guidelines.

St. Michaels House Services

St. Michael's House Services is a community-based organisation committed to providing a quality person centred service and high standard of living to people with an intellectual disability (ID) in the greater Dublin area.  St. Michael’s House is committed to providing individualised supports to people so that they can enjoy experiences, opportunities, and lifestyles similar to their peers, in their local community.

St. Michaels House, as one of the largest disability services, provides support services to over 2,300 people with a disability.  Our comprehensive services include: Children’s Clinical Services via CDNT, Preschools, Special Schools, Day Centres, Residential Centres, Independent living Supports, Palliative Care, and Respite Centres.

St. Michaels House adult services also provide services to young adults as they transition from Children’s School services to St. Michaels House adult Services, such as vocational training, third level education and work experience.

The National Forensic Mental Health Service (NFMHS), is a tertiary mental health service and an integral part of the HSE. The NFMHS, Portrane is a new state-of-the-art facility located 22km from Dublin City in Portrane, North County Dublin. The new facility has a capacity to care for up to 170 in-patients. This is a safe caring place where we work together to provide high quality specialist forensic services to individuals who require care in a therapeutic secure setting.  We offer an environment where rehabilitation, stabilisation, safety and person centred care will support patients in their individual recovery. Our Vision is for NFMHS to be a centre of excellence that supports recovery through the delivery of high quality forensic mental healthcare to patients and their families. Our model of care is reflective of the objective of mental health care in ensuring the facilitation of the recovery and reintegration of the service user into their community. 

NDMHS provide mental health assessment, care and treatment to a population of just over 270,000 people (Central Statistics Office, 2022).  Staff are committed to operating from a recovery; strengths based approach that acknowledges the unique nature of each individual’s journey to wellness and health. We are committed to the provision of individualised care within a multidisciplinary team environment and at the least complex level. Our range of facilities include acute services provided in the Ashlin Centre, located on the grounds of Beaumont Hospital. O’ Casey Rooms in Fairview Community Unit provide care for people with mental health problems in later life. Our Community services are part of the 5 Primary Care Networks within the region and consist of for example: Homebased Treatment Teams, Day Hospitals, Outpatient Clinics, Eating Disorders Team, Rehabilitation Services and the Wellness Centre. NDMHS has 6 Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioners in: Primary Care, Mental Health Services for Older People – Liaison and Dementia, Early Intervention Psychosis and Liaison Psychiatry. It is estimated that one in four people will experience mental health difficulties during their lifetime. The aim of NDMHS is to enable these people to achieve and maintain the highest level of health and wellbeing within their community. 

DNCMHS provide mental health services for Cabra, Finglas, Blanchardstown, Clontarf, Marino, Fairview, Ballymun and North Inner City areas. It is predominately a community-based mental health service with a catchment population of approximately 362,253. 

Services are divided into acute care, rehabilitation services, continuing care for individuals with enduring mental health needs and out-patient services. 

There are sub-specialist services such as liaison psychiatry, old age psychiatry, homebased treatment service, talk therapies, child and adolescent mental health services, and a homeless Mental Health service.

DNCMHS also operates a regional Psychiatric Intensive Care Service in the purpose built facility in the Phoenix Care Centre, Grangegorman.  Other acute (inpatient) services are provided in Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown and the Mater Hospital. 

As a mental health student nurse in DNCMHS, you may have a nursing placement in some of the following areas located in Dublin North City, Dublin West, Dublin South and Kildare:

St. Joseph’s Mental Health Intellectual Disability Services

St. Joseph’s Mental Health Intellectual Disability Services.

St Joseph’s Intellectual Disability Service provides services for people with an Intellectual Disability in HSE Dublin and North East. Care is provided in a holistic manner in a variety of settings. A large component of clients catered for have a dual diagnosis of Mental Health in addition to their Intellectual Disability. St Joseph’s mission is to develop our services in a person centred manner to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of our service users, respecting their dignity, their individuality and their uniqueness.

  During your training you will gain valuable insights into the role of the Intellectual Disability Nurse and their contribution to the wellbeing of our service users. You will be fully supported by the Nurse Practice Team and all nursing and management staff  throughout St. Joseph’s. In addition, you will be provided with an array of clinical placements to both enhance your learning opportunities and your personal growth as a student nurse.

Founded in 1857 by the Daughters of Charity,  SVHF provides a broad range of Quality, Person-Centred, Mental Health Inpatient Services and Community Supports.

The Main Hospital Campus,  situated in Fairview, Dublin 3, delivers Acute, Adolescent  and Adult In-Patient care.

SVHF works in partnership with the HSE and the Mater Misericordiae University to support the delivery of Community-based Residential, Homecare and Acute Day Services across the lifespan.

Additionally, SVHF has forged links with a number of private, voluntary and charitable agencies who assist people experiencing mental health challenges.

Students affiliated to SVHF will be offered unique opportunities to undertake placements in many of the clinical areas listed above.

As a long-established Undergraduate Teaching Hospital and Partner Service of DCU, the Nursing Practice Development Department along with our frontline clinical nursing staff are highly invested in and committed to, teaching, guiding and supporting student nurses throughout the 4 Year Programme and beyond.
