Mel Duffy's LGBTQ+ research showcased on X by funding agency

The Irish Research Council is showcasing the research of Mel Duffy, Assistant Professor in Sociology and Sexuality Studies in the School of Nursing, Psychotherapy and Community Health, as part of an X campaign to coincide with PRIDE month.

Dr Mel Duffy's research project funded by the Irish Research Council aims to upskill homecare workers in caring for LGBTQ+ people.

The upskilling will be done through an online training module developed by Dr Duffy who would like to see a symbol that indicates when a carer has successfully completed the module.

The module was developed with reference to interviews that were done with older LGBTQ+ people, as well as surveys of home care providers.

"The module is free and available online for people to do in their own time with the hope that they will come back and continue learning," said Dr Duffy.

"It is important to create a safe space for LGBTQ+ individuals to be themselves without fear of prejudice or discrimination.

"There is a need for providers to understand and respect the identity and experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals and provide care that is tailored to their needs."
