Naughton Fellowships

The Naughton Fellowship programme allows students with a background in, or aptitude for, STEM fields to experience international research and educational opportunities through a funded exchange programme involving the University of Notre Dame and some of Ireland’s leading research universities: Dublin City University, Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork, University College Dublin, and University of Galway.

Irish undergraduates and Master’s students can attend the University of Notre Dame on the fellowship, while Notre Dame undergraduates and Master’s students can travel to Ireland to study and research topics as diverse as Structural Engineering to Marine Biology and Public Health to Data Science and Analytics.

Research Experience for Undergraduate Students:

The Naughton Fellowship Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programme offers promising undergraduate researchers in the STEM disciplines the chance to engage in global research opportunities

Successful applicants from Ireland will work side-by-side with faculty and graduate students at the University of Notre Dame, collaboratively solving problems and making an impact on the research in question.

Undergraduates from Dublin City University, Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork, University College Dublin can apply to this programme which lasts approximately 10 weeks over summer. Students will receive a generous stipend for travel and living expenses.

The internal deadline for this programme is Friday, 6 December 2024. For information on how to apply, contact anne.burke@dcu.ie in the Faculty administration team.

ESTEEM Programme for Masters Students:

The Naughton Fellowship offers a valuable opportunity for graduate students pursuing a Master's degree to spend a year abroad studying on the ESTEEM programme at the University of Notre Dame in the United States. The ESTEEM programme, aimed at future leaders in the STEM field, immerses a student in a year of graduate-level study of innovation, entrepreneurship, and general business, designed to augment and make more marketable a student's scientific, technical, and engineering skills.

Through the Naughton Fellowship, students earn a full tuition scholarship, a full health insurance subsidy for the sponsored student insurance plan, and a $17,000 USD stipend for living expenses. Hear firsthand from DCU graduate David Carr (School of Mathematical Sciences) as he shares his experiences with the Naughton Fellowship and life on the ESTEEM Graduate Programme at Notre Dame in this insightful interview!

Faculty Research Accelerator Programme:

The mission of the Naughton Fellowships Faculty Research Accelerator Program is to catalyse and support collaborations between faculty at the leading research universities of Ireland and the University of Notre Dame in order to advance collaborative research and foster deeper and stronger ties between both the institutions and the two countries. The program will support collaborative research at the highest level of excellence in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, as well as cognitive science).

Proposals may request up to $120,000 USD in funding. To best facilitate joint research, a variety of uses may be proposed. For example, the program will support joint Notre Dame/Irish research programs with budgets that include supplies, equipment, and trainee support, as well as travel for faculty seeking to develop new collaborative research programs. Regardless of intended use, research excellence, the scope of the cross-institutional participation, participation of graduate students or postdoctoral traineesand the potential for sustained collaborations will be guiding principles and key review criteria.

More information on this opportunity is available on the University of Notre Dame website.

Naughton Scholarship for Leaving Certificate Students:
