Ruth Mattimoe
Dr
Dr. Ruth Mattimoe, B.A.(Mod.)(Organic Chemistry), (TCD), Dip. Stats.(TCD), FCA, Ph.D. (Manchester) is a PWC-trained Chartered Accountant, (having converted from a Natural Sciences background) as well as an Ass. Professor in Accounting. Her teaching mainly concentrates on Advanced Management Accounting and Intermediate Financial Statement Analysis. She also acts as the CIMA advocate and ACCA Liaison Officer for the Business School.
Under the supervision of Prof. Bob Scapens, she studied for her doctorate in Accounting at the Manchester School of Accounting and Finance, with her proposal winning a CIMA Research Foundation Ph.d Travel grant in a competition among UK universities. Subsequently, she was jointly awarded a CIMA grant (2008) for post-doctoral work on the role of the accountant in UK hotel chains and a Failte Ireland Applied Industry Fellowship 2008/09 for a sole project on financial management skills in small owner-managed Irish tourism businesses. Her collaborative work on these areas has been published in international journals. These were the first such awards for an accounting academic researching the hotel and tourism sector.
Real life issues in hotels, tourism entities, farms and professional service firms provide a sustainable platform for her research, which is informed by a number of theoretical perspectives drawn from institutional theory and sensemaking. In particular, she welcomes research students interested in decision-making and performance measurement in farming and in hotels as well as changing business models in professional service firms.
