New DCU Policy for the Use of Animals for Scientific or Educational Purposes
Biomedical Research at DCU takes many different forms across a range of scientific disciplines and in some cases the use of animals is necessary. The use of animals in research projects takes place only when there is no other suitable alternative and it is closely monitored and regulated. All projects have prior approval of the DCU Research Ethics committee and of the Irish licensing authority, the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA), and are undertaken in compliance with the standards set down by the European Directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes. The University is committed to minimize the use of animals in research, while contributing to the advance of scientific knowledge.
DCU Executive approved the University Policy on the Use of Animals for Scientific or Educational Purposes on the 20th of September, 2016 in order to provide guidance to staff and students.
