Call Deadline: This is a rolling call. There will be one round launched in 2024 with two separate closing dates and associated peer review cycles.
The closing date for Cycle 1 is 10th April 2024. The closing date for Cycle 2 is 18th December 2024.
TORA Deadline: 3rd April (for Cycle 1)
The Applied Partnership Awards (APA) scheme aims to support applied research projects in which researchers and knowledge users come together to advance timely and relevant research and optimise knowledge translation into policy and practice.
The APA award requires a joint application encompassing both researchers and knowledge users. It must be clear how the knowledge user will be integrated throughout the project. The outcome of the research should have a direct impact on decision-making in the knowledge user organisation.
The Applied Partnership Awards are open to all areas of health. In this round, the HRB also specifically welcome applications in the area of mental health, to support their work related to Sharing the Vision – A Mental Health Policy for Everyone. These projects should use health services and population health research methods and approaches to support the implementation of the recommendations and associated actions in the Sharing the Vision Implementation Plan 2022-2024. A dedicated budget for mental health research has been provided by the Department of Health for this purpose. As such, quality permitting, additional awards in the area of mental health will be funded through this call.
The award will be for between 12 and 24 months. A minimum co-funding commitment of 20% of the total award amount requested from the HRB must be provided by the knowledge user organisation. For mental health research proposals, in recognition of dedicated funds being made available under Sharing the Vision, the co-funding requirement is a minimum of 10% of the total amount requested from the HRB. Co-funding commitments must be cash contributions. Cash contributions greater than the minimum amounts specified above, or additional in-kind contributions, are also welcome and encouraged.
Applications can be submitted at any time up to the second closing date. The rolling nature of the call enables researchers and knowledge users to develop collaborations and submit their application at the time that best suits them.
All applications must be made using the HRB Grant Electronic Management System (GEMS).

The Irish Cancer Society are now accepting applications for their Summer Studentship Programme 2024.
There are four summer studentship awards available. Students may apply to conduct either Translational or Survivorship cancer research projects. Applicants are only eligible to apply for one type of studentship award, which is determined based on their proposed field of cancer research. Funding of €2,500 will be awarded to support the student for a maximum period of 8 weeks, starting no earlier than 1st June 2024.
The Summer Studentship Programme aims to offer excellent undergraduate students the opportunity to undertake cancer research at an early stage in their career, and to work with established researchers in high-quality research environments. Students must not be in their final-year of study.
Further information about the call, including application guidelines, can be found on the Irish Cancer Society website. Applications can be made through the Irish Cancer Society Gateway Grant Tracker online system.

The Evidence-for-Policy (EfP) Research Programme is a new collaborative initiative between the HRB and the Department of Health (DOH) to support research projects that aim to strengthen the evidence base for policy development and evaluation of policy implementation by the DOH.
The aim is to generate evidence to inform policy making in health and social care in a timely, rigorous, high quality, open and transparent manner. To deliver this, the EfP funding scheme will support high-quality, internationally competitive research (assessed through peer review) that addresses evidence gaps that are a priority for health and social care policy in Ireland. This new scheme will play a critical role in advancing research in areas highlighted in the Department’s Statement of Priorities - Health and Social Care research (2023-2025) and is purposefully designed to facilitate integrated knowledge translation and collaboration across the research lifecycle between policy units in the Department of Health, other key stakeholders and the research community.
This call is the first round of the EfP initiative and invites research proposals to address a range of topics/questions proposed by the DoH. While a detailed specification for each topic/question will be provided in the scheme guidance notes, the HRB wish to draw your attention to some of the topics that will likely be included in the call:
- A mixed methods study to examine the drivers of out of pocket (OOP) expenditure in community healthcare settings and the impact on health outcomes in Ireland.
- (i) What are the reasons or drivers for the increase in Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) in Ireland over the last five years? (ii) What drives use/non-use of condoms and availing/not availing of STI testing in key groups in Ireland?
- (i) A mapping of the current diagnostic options and treatments in Ireland for conditions associated with the menstrual cycle (ii) A review of the effectiveness of interventions to improve access to and quality of diagnosis, treatment, and care (in primary and secondary care settings) for menstrual cycle-related discomforts and conditions. (iii) A gap analysis to highlight where no current treatment and care pathways have been identified, and where there is potential for future innovative advances.
- What is the impact of reimbursed medicines on healthcare service utilisation in Ireland from the perspective of the health and social care system? What reductions in healthcare service utilisation are provided by new or more intense provision of medicines to patients?
- An evidence-informed approach to developing a National Primary Care Therapy Waiting list protocol.
- Health in Transition health system review (HiT) for Ireland, as part of the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies HiT series.
- An outcome evaluation to: (1) measure the impact of Advanced Practice roles for Health & Social Care Professionals (HSCP), including on access to care and the patient journey at this interface between primary and secondary care, and (2) generate evidence on the barriers and enablers for implementing and scaling further reforms.

The SFI-NSF I-Corps@SFI Entrepreneurial Training Programme (ETP) supports research teams based at Eligible Research Bodies to participate in the NSF I-Corps Teams programme. The NSF I-Corps Teams programme provides researchers with real-world, hands-on, immersive learning about what it takes to successfully transfer knowledge that benefits society. As part of this programme, researchers discover impact opportunities through application of the NSF I-Corps evidence-based entrepreneurship methodology. This assists them to identify significant opportunities for their research, enhance the quality of evidence in assessment of that opportunity and reduce the time and risk associated with translating promising ideas to impact.
SFI-funded researchers can request funding of up to €35k direct costs (no overheads are awarded under this programme) for a period of up to 6-months. Funding will be awarded on a competitive basis and requests must be fully justified. Teams successful at application stage will participate in the NSF I-Corps Teams programme which is an intensive 7-week training programme delivered by the NSF during which teams will receive training in evidence-based entrepreneurship and undertake extensive opportunity (e.g. stakeholder, beneficiary, customer) discovery activities.
